Space, Time and motion

What does it mean for an object to be in motion? More specifically, what is the cause of motion? How can it be measured, or quantified? Is it possible to think something is in motion when it is truly standing still? And is there a maximum speed of that any object can move? In this course, we will engage in a careful study of dynamics—the science of the causes of motion and rest—paying particular attention to the ideas of space and time. We will focus on reading selections from Galileo’s Dialogues, Pascal's Physical Treatises, Newton’s Principia and Einstein’s Relativity. Weekly laboratory sessions complement our classroom discussions. I look forward to our time together this semester studying some of the most significant and insightful works on physics that have been written!

  • Force and Rotation Lab: On Friday, April 3, Prof. Schindler and Dr. Kuehn videotaped ourselves doing the Force and Rotation laboratory (asgv2_ex. 20.3). I have posted the associated videos. You should watch them all and carry out the requested calculations and data analysis. The lab reports will be due by Saturday at midnight (the night before Easter). By the way: the hanging mass was 456 +/- 5 grams. You'll need this to calculate its momentum while it is swinging around.

  • ASG v2 Ch25: Watch the one video for Chap 25 by midnight on Saturday, May 2.

  • ASG v2 Ch27: Watch the videos for Chap 27 by midnight on Wednesday, May 6. Do asgv2_ex27-1.
  • Relativity Lab: Prof. Schindler and Dr. Kuehn videotaped ourselves doing the Relativity Laboratory (ASG v2 Ex. 29.2). You should watch the three relativity experiment videos and the one data analysis video. One of the main points of the lab is to determine (using the measured weight of the suspended mass) (i) the speed of the elevator and (ii) the height of the elevator shaft. Here is a copy of the Logger Pro data file with some of the analysis done. You might need to "right click" the data file link and save it as a .cmbl file on your desktop in order to open it with Logger Pro. The lab reports will be due at midnight on Friday, May 8. By the way: you do not need to know anything about Einstein's theory of relativity in order to do this laboratory experiment.
  • Final examination: For the final exam in PHY 151/201, I will be posting an exam on MyWLC. It will be available for download at the beginning of the scheduled exam time (10:30 - 12:15 on Monday, May 11) . You will need to download the exam at 10:30, take it, and upload it to MyWLC by 12:30. There is a late submission grace time until 12:45. You may use your class textbook (physical or e-book), but nothing else (no notes, homework, etc., calculators, or other electronic devices). Here is a copy of last year's final exam.
  • Study session: On this Friday (May 8) from 9:30 - 11:30, Dr. Kuehn will hold a final exam review session on zoom. During this study session, I plan to go through the answers to the final exam from the spring of 2018 (the final exam from -two- years ago. Note: this is not the one I posted last week from last year).
